Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.

With new episodes of “Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” coming back Tuesday, March 3 at 9:00 p.m. ET on ABC, our heroes won’t be the only ones making a come back!

Jaimie Alexander reprises her role as the Lady Sif from the Thor films with this season’s twelfth episode, marking her second appearance in “Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” Now, Sif has returned to Earth with a new mission that has her coming across our Agents’ path yet again!

We spoke with series Executive Producers Jed Whedon and Maurissa Tancharoen about Sif’s return and what it means for our heroes as they face their place in an even bigger universe than they ever imagined!

Marvel.com: How early in the planning for the season did you guys talk about bringing Sif back for another round?

Jed Whedon: We knew some of the stuff that was going to unfold in the middle of the season, so we had our eye on it early. [Jaimie] is, first of all, a pleasure to work with, so we’re not scared of it. As we expand the universe, those sort of elements from far, far away feel like they have a place here.

Maurissa Tancharoen: Having her on the show last season definitely had an impact, and like Jed said, she is just a joy to work with. We were definitely anticipating involving her in the second season.

Marvel.com: When Sif came around last season, the characters hadn’t encountered that many super powered beings. They had a few, but at this point we’ve got someone with powers actually on the team. How has that changed the overall dynamic of Sif and everyone else?

Maurissa Tancharoen: Well, last time we encountered her, she was basically hunting down a rogue Asgardian, so we know right off the bat that her purpose here is otherworldly. Where we’re leading in the second half of the season, we may be using Sif as a sort of catalyst to open up where we’re going.

Jed Whedon: And Asgardians have knowledge that humans do not, and perhaps she will share some of it with us.

Maurissa Tancharoen: Yes, perhaps she will shed some light on questions that we may have.

Marvel.com: As you guys are introducing more elements, from Inhumans to the return of Sif, your canvas is growing bigger and bigger with every episode. As you’re introducing these new elements from the larger universe, how do you look to balance that with the grounded character dynamics you’ve established over the last year and a half?

Maurissa Tancharoen: That is something that is very important to us, the roots of their relationships. And I think you’ll see, emotionally, how it affects all of them as they take this new information in and their world slowly expands.

Jed Whedon: S.H.I.E.L.D. was founded both on a curiosity and a fear of all these new elements that are coming into our world, and we’ll see a lot of that reflected in our characters. Last year, in terms of our canvas expanding, we had to be very slow going about it because there aren’t a lot of heroes [or] powered people in the movies. There are very few. As we’re slowly getting into the back half of our season, they start to pile up. You start to see more and more options and more and more places you can go as more movies come out. But as Maurissa said, it’s very important to us that our show is founded on this idea, “Not all heroes are super.” So it does throw a wrench into the works when powers enter our team, and when the answers come, sometimes it’s not an answer you want to hear.

Marvel.com: What is it about Sif, both her character and her connection to the larger Marvel Universe that allows her to play so well in the world that you guys have created?

Maurissa Tancharoen: Well, you put Asgardians and humans together and it’s hilarious. There is a fish out of water quality to her, but again, she is a fierce warrior, so she has pride. Her language is different, so not only is she a commanding presence but there’s lots of room for humor. If you put Sif and Coulson in conversation, there’s lots of fun to be had.

Jed Whedon: And like Maurissa was saying, she’s a fierce warrior [who] takes herself pretty seriously, as do all Asgardians. So it’s fun to put her next to Coulson, who doesn’t take himself as seriously.

Marvel.com: When you’re adding more characters like Sif, as well as Skye’s powers and more Inhumans, what can we look forward to in terms of ramping up the spectacle of the show, for lack of a better term, in the second half of the season?

Maurissa Tancharoen: We can’t say too much.

Jed Whedon: I will say, this is still long form storytelling and a part of the emotional journey we want to take our characters on, so we want to take them on all the different stages of any sort of emotional process. We’re not going to come out and say, “It’s a feature film where everybody has powers!” We still want to tell the story of, “What is it like for a human being to experience this? What is it like for a friend when you change? What is it like for someone who has never seen an alien to experience them coming to Earth?” We still want to tell those human stories.

Maurissa Tancharoen: As much as there will be spectacle, there will be a balance of what it means to our characters. I think the biggest payoff will be just that, how it affects our characters, how it affects the dynamics between them.

Jed Whedon: Hopefully the payoff will be emotional.

Marvel.com: To wrap things up, given this is the first otherworldly or powered being our team meets after Skye undergoes her transformation, is there anything you guys can tease about what Sif’s presence might mean for Skye in the upcoming episode?

Maurissa Tancharoen: It’ll mean something significant for her.

Jed Whedon: The more that these things are connected, if you pull on a string it starts to hurt everybody. We’re at a point where no one can be affected by something without everybody else being affected. It will mean something not only to Skye, but to everyone.

Marvel's Kevin Feige to Produce Next Installment of the Spider-Man Franchise with Amy Pascal

(Culver City, California, and Burbank, California February 09, 2015) – Sony Pictures Entertainment and Marvel Studios announced today that Sony is bringing Marvel into the amazing world of Spider-Man.

Under the deal, the new Spider-Man will first appear in a Marvel film from Marvel's Cinematic Universe (MCU). Sony Pictures will thereafter release the next installment of its $4 billion Spider-Man franchise, on July 28, 2017, in a film that will be co-produced by Kevin Feige and his expert team at Marvel and Amy Pascal, who oversaw the franchise launch for the studio 13 years ago. Together, they will collaborate on a new creative direction for the web slinger. Sony Pictures will continue to finance, distribute, own and have final creative control of the Spider-Man films.

Marvel and Sony Pictures are also exploring opportunities to integrate characters from the MCU into future Spider-Man films.

The new relationship follows a decade of speculation among fans about whether Spider-Man – who has always been an integral and important part of the larger Marvel Universe in the comic books – could become part of the Marvel Universe on the big screen. Spider-Man has more than 50 years of history in Marvel's world, and with this deal, fans will be able to experience Spider-Man taking his rightful place among other Super Heroes in the MCU.

Bob Iger, Chairman and CEO, The Walt Disney Company said: "Spider-Man is one of Marvel's great characters, beloved around the world. We're thrilled to work with Sony Pictures to bring the iconic web-slinger into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, which opens up fantastic new opportunities for storytelling and franchise building."

"We always want to collaborate with the best and most successful filmmakers to grow our franchises and develop our characters. Marvel, Kevin Feige and Amy, who helped orchestrate this deal, are the perfect team to help produce the next chapter of Spider-Man," said Michael Lynton, Chairman and CEO of Sony Pictures Entertainment. "This is the right decision for the franchise, for our business, for Marvel, and for the fans."

"Sony Pictures and Marvel Studios share a love for the characters in the Spider-Man universe and have a long, successful history of working together. This new level of collaboration is the perfect way to take Peter Parker's story into the future," added Doug Belgrad, president, Sony Pictures Entertainment Motion Picture Group.

"I am thrilled to team with my friends at Sony Pictures along with Amy Pascal to produce the next Spider-Man movie," said Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige. "Amy has been deeply involved in the realization on film of one of the world’s most beloved characters. Marvel's involvement will hopefully deliver the creative continuity and authenticity that fans demand from the MCU. I am equally excited for the opportunity to have Spider-Man appear in the MCU, something which both we at Marvel, and fans alike, have been looking forward to for years."

Spider-Man, embraced all over the world, is the most successful franchise in the history of Sony Pictures, with the five films having taken in more than $4 billion worldwide.

Secret Wars Correspondence: Inferno

Inferno #1 cover by Javier Garron

Once upon a time, demons invaded New York City, transforming landmarks and citizens alike in the event marked as Inferno. Fortunately, the X-Men battled back the forces of evil, albeit at great personal cost, and managed to save the day.

However, in one of the Warzones! we will see beginning this May thanks to writer Dennis Hopeless and artist Javier Garron as part of Secret Wars, the INFERNO rages on.

“One thing that always bummed me out about the original story was how quickly everything got resolved,” confesses Hopeless. “It was an issue or two of crazy in each series and then back to normal. I always wanted more. So in our story, the X-Men lost the battle over Manhattan five years back and the evil has been transforming the island ever since. At this point the Empire State Building is this hideous living spire that just keeps growing and twisting up into the charred sky. The city’s a burnt out husk and the demons run the show.”

For Hopeless, taking the writing reins on INFERNO allowed him to revisit a scenario that appealed to him on a professional level and tapping into his X-Men fandom.

“I just love the basic concept of the X-Men versus demons in an evil Manhattan,” he explains. “Also, demons are a lot like evil robots or monsters in that it’s ok to straight up destroy them. No punches pulled here.”

The original Inferno delved into many of the mutant heroes’ dark sides, but perhaps none more than Illyana Rasputin, aka Magik.

“I really loved the exploration of Illyana’s growing up in [Limbo],” Hopeless recounts from the classic tale told in NEW MUTANTS at the time. “She has this whole crazy history with all these demons that none of her teammates or her brother understood. We’re definitely going to be delving into Illyana’s Darkchylde side and how it affects her relationships.”

Speaking of Illyana’s brother, Colossus, who Hopeless previously handled during his run on CABLE & X-FORCE, will be stepping to the fore during INFERNO, taking a rare leadership role as his battered squad of X-Men—including Nightcrawler, Boom Boom, and Domino—stands their ground against demonic forces and former teammates alike.

“[This] Colossus is much more single-minded than the one we know and love,” the writer warns. “He lost his sister to the Inferno five years ago and is absolutely obsessed with getting her back. Unfortunately, nobody is allowed in or out of the island. Piotr has been carrying this heavy burden around for years, always waiting for his next opportunity to right the wrong. He’s definitely not somebody you’d want to mess with.”

Also factoring into INFERNO: Cyclops, Jean Grey, Madelyne Pryor, Havok, N’astirh, and S’ym; in other words, all your old favorites in a terrifying new campaign.

“Javier’s covers have this amazing ‘X-Men starring in super creepy renaissance paintings’ feel that’s just pitch perfect for the series,” says Hopeless of artistic collaborator Garron. “I really look forward to what he’ll do with the story.

“Did I mention X-Men fighting demons?”

90s By The Numbers: Excalibur #94

It's time to face facts, true believers – the 90's were awesome. The pouches were plentiful, the costumes were impractical, and Marvel Universe dentists made a fortune correcting damages caused by perpetually gritted teeth. Thanks to the power of nostalgia, though, what would once be considered extremely embarrassing can now be called extremely awesome!

With that in mind, we've pulled a Marvel comic from the not-so-modern era and broken it down, one radical fact at a time! This week we're singling out EXCALIBUR #94 by Warren Ellis and Casey Jones. Here's "Days of Future Tense " by the numbers!

52 visible teeth in the mouths of 2 techno-organic warliquids

29 wires, cables and pipes in future Excalibur's fallout shelter

Cyclops in Marvel Puzzle Quest

Scott Summers, the most Uncanny of X-Men, makes his inaugural appearance in “Marvel Puzzle Quest” ready to lift his visor and let the optic blasts rip. Producer Joe Fletcher from D3Publisher stopped by to tell us all about Cyclops and his astonishing abilities.

Marvel.com: How do you go from Doreen Green, the adorable and formidable Squirrel Girl, to Star-Lord, an irreverent space cowboy, to Scott Summers aka Cyclops, the most wanted mutant in the Marvel Universe right now?

Joe Fletcher: He may be one of the most wanted mutants in the Marvel Universe, but he’s also one of the most wanted by fans of “Marvel Puzzle Quest.” So while it seems that anti-mutant rights agitators can’t find him over on ol’ Earth-616, we tracked him down in the Marvel Games Universe and got him ready for an appearance in MPQ.  Scott’s a great case of having a lot of story potential within him too, what with him being a paragon of virtue before and being a paragon of a different sort nowadays.

Marvel.com: And he really has grown out of his squeaky clean self. Does he fit better into Puzzle Quest's Dark Reign world after his run in with the Phoenix?

Joe Fletcher: I wouldn’t say he fits in “better” now than before.  The cynicism that’s resulted from handling the Phoenix Force and his resulting fall from grace has put him more in the “jaded hero” camp than the Wolverine-cited “goody two-shoes” camp though.

It’s important to note though that in the Marvel Games Universe, Professor X is still kickin’ around, so Cyclops doesn’t have that death on his conscience or the huge amount of red in his ledger that Earth-616 Scott has. Besides, if Fury and S.H.I.E.L.D. can make use of Juggernaut and Magneto to do what needs to be done, Cyclops is small potatoes on the evil list.

Marvel.com: Scott blasts bad guys with the best of them, but it’s his tactical instinct and precise shot calling that makes him one of the most formidable mutants around. How did you guys address this in his kit?

Joe Fletcher: This 3* (rare) version of Cyclops runs off the power and leadership side of Cyclops’ persona, with abilities that show off the more brute force side of him as opposed to the Hawkeye-like trick shots that he’s also perfectly capable of. Running as a Red/Yellow/Black hero, he shares similar color strengths to an equally powerful leader in Carol Danvers Captain Marvel but pulls off that aspect in a bit of a different way.

His Red power is his most basic and beloved, Optic Blasts. Here Scott blows up a random row of tiles in a display of raw power while dealing direct damage to the targeted opponent. As the ability levels it deals more and more damage, where at max level it’s capable of taking a large chunk of health out of a lower hit point character like The Hood. Add in the cascades that the destroyed row causes and a Strike tile or two and it’s quite possible to one shot those support type characters.

With Cyclops’s Yellow power, we show off his leadership as a Mutant Revolutionary. In a bit of a flip from fellow teacher Storm’s Yellow, instead of providing Team Up AP, the eldest of the Summers children instead takes Team Up tiles on the board and converts them to Red tiles. This will naturally feed into either his own Optic Blasts or some of the other powerful Red based abilities like Wolverine’s Best There Is or Thor (Goddess)’s Smite.

Finally, we have his Black power, where Scott really takes the gloves—and potentially the visor—off. With a 13 AP charged Full Blast, Scott deals a huge amount of damage to the opponent in one shot. At max level, this is enough to down support characters in a blow. But more than that, if there are enough Red tiles on the board, Mr. Summers really lets loose, pulling off his visor and unleashing his full power. This deals even more damage but has the downside of stunning himself for a couple of turns. Leveling up the ability increases not only the overall damage but allows Scott to recover faster from unleashing the amazing power he holds.

Marvel.com: Does he play well with his other X-gene carrying compadres? And what role does Cyclops fill on a team?

Joe Fletcher: Scott was built to offer a different side of the coin from Storm (Mohawk) in his leadership role, but still fit well with his other compatriots. Instead of providing Team Up AP like Storm, he instead gives Red AP, providing openings that Wolverine can take advantage of.

As well, his color strengths mix well with the more sometimes unsavory side of the X-Men, allowing Mystique to do what she does best in undermining the enemy while still leaving Scott wide open for blasting away and leaving Wolverine open in Green to enter a Berserker Rage which Scott or Raven can then use to finish off the opponent with a Full Blast or Masterstroke. So yes, Scott is definitely built with his teammates in mind while still being able to stand with many other team comps as both a leader and an offensive type.

Marvel.com: And when do we get to play as Cyclops? I gotta admit, I can’t wait!

Joe Fletcher: Scott Summers will be available as a reward from the upcoming run of Iso-8 Brotherhood, starting on February 12.  It’ll run for about five days, so players will be able to start using his powers to their fullest right around February 17 depending on what end time players choose.

Marvel.com: Also. I heard there are some meaty treats from Deadpool coming. When will that start and what is he offering?

Joe Fletcher: Deadpool has been brainstorming quite a few things lately in a bid to get himself featured more often in MPQ.  Lately he’s been sequestered in the bathroom of the X-Men’s Blackbird with his full set of homemade “Marvel Puzzle Quest” Action Figures with random mutterings of “underwater levels,” “R71,” and “three stars” coming over the plane’s intercom; Fury’s starting to get a little worried, and he’s thinking of sending Scott into the Blackbird bathroom as his first official S.H.I.E.L.D. mission to find out what’s going on. Stay tuned to the game in the coming days as the details will emerge about this new treat.

SHE-HULK #1: “Motion”

I got a call from Jeanine Schaefer on September 10, 2013 about doing a new She-Hulk book for Marvel. Jeanine is the amazing editor who worked on most of the series (alongside Tom Brennan). We were lucky to have both of them, as well as the many other editorial/production/PR people who worked on the series. I suspect that editing this book was an interesting challenge. I had a very specific sense of what I wanted to do, as did Javier Pulido (the artist who created the majority of the artwork for the series alongside colorist Muntsa Vicente). I knew from the start that I wanted this to be a talky legal book as opposed to a traditional superhero punch-em-up. That concept could have gone terribly wrong (by which I mean it could have been hideously boring) – and I think editorial guidance is  significant part of why it went right.

Anyway, let’s talk a bit about the issue itself.

The idea here was to introduce both Jennifer Walters and the setup I was planning to use for the series – She-Hulk starting her own private practice out in Brooklyn, dealing with all sorts of weird/cool clients from the Marvel Universe. I figured that Jen knows pretty much everyone in the MU by this point (she’s been on a billion teams), and I know from experience that if you’re the only person your friends know who works in the law, then they call you for every legal problem they experience, even if it has nothing to do with your specialty. Lawyers are generally hyper-focused on one practice area or another, just like a person with a medical degree might specialize in brain surgery or podiatry or whatever. For whatever reason, though, many folks don’t seem to make the same distinction with attorneys. Applying that logic to She-Hulk, it just made sense to me that if she hung out a shingle, she’d be getting calls from all over the place.

Seemed like a nice engine for a series.

I should mention at this point that I’m an attorney myself, for anyone reading this who doesn’t already know. I used to never mention my legal work when I was breaking in – call it paranoia, maybe, but I felt then that lawyering was seen as a fundamentally uncreative profession. Or even more, I thought that people’s reaction to my being an attorney who was also trying to write comics was unpredictable. Breaking in is hard, and I wanted to control as many variables as I could. If was going to be judged about anything, I wanted it to be the work, nothing else.

I did exactly what we see She-Hulk doing in issue #1. I left a job at what’s called a “white-shoe” (fancy office, big clients, somewhat to extremely soulless) firm in midtown Manhattan to start my own practice. That happened a little over ten years ago. Starting a practice is not easy, no matter how many Tony Starks and Reed Richards you happen to know. It’s a huge leap of faith. You’re turning away from (relative) short-term certainty as far as income, benefits and security in favor of (hoped-for) increases in long-term income and freedom. It’s really that last one that’s important both for me and Jen Walters. I am fairly sure that if I hadn’t left that big firm so long ago, I wouldn’t be doing what I am today. It was a big deal, and I wanted to write a series that captured some of the constant tug of war between unexpected setbacks and little triumphs that characterized my first few years as a solo practitioner.

That’s also why this issue is called “Motion” – it’s a lot of change happening in a short period of time for the Jade Giantess (and of course, since you file motions with the court to try to get them to do things for you… it works on that level too.)

The discussion Jen has with the partners when she’s having her bonus meeting – I had that conversation (more or less – definitely less table smashing.)

SHE-HULK #2: “…AND?!”

I knew from the start that I wanted two characters to help Jen out with her practice – a paralegal/assistant, and a friend character that she could hang out with after hours. The para became Angie Huang, of course, and the friend ended up being Patsy Walker, aka Hellcat. Let’s talk about Angie first.

She-Hulk was always conceived as a multicultural book. The Marvel Universe is supposed to reflect the “world outside your window.” I live in New York, and I’ve lived a lot of other places as well, all over the world. The world outside my window isn’t just one color.

I’ve worked with a lot of paralegals over the years in my legal practice, and I was one before I went to law school. It’s a really tough job, and an essential one. Paralegals are responsible for organizing the attorneys, shuffling and analyzing the mounds of documents that come into a firm on pretty much any case, and millions of other tasks and details that allow a law office to function smoothly. I don’t think they get as much credit as they deserve, and so… Angie.

Patsy Walker! The best! Kind of a trainwreck, but a very fun trainwreck. Fiercely loyal to her friends, maybe with a little chip on her shoulder, maybe even a little jealous that some of them have better powers than she does. The idea with Patsy was to give Jen Walters a character that she could almost take care of a little bit. Jen has often been shown as the wild one who needs someone to take care of her – and so flipping that dynamic somewhat seemed like it could generate some good stories. We see that most directly in Issue 7 – but certainly there’s some of that here, as Patsy gets hammered and, against the advice of her legal counsel (Jen) decides to go wreck an A.I.M. base.

I didn’t want to make them perfect, no-conflict super-pals, though. That’s not how close friends really are, in my experience. The closer you are to someone, the easier it is for them to drive you crazy – sometimes inadvertently, sometimes on purpose – and that’s certainly where Jen and Patsy are, in this issue and beyond it.

SHE-HULK #3: “The Man Who Wouldn’t Be King”

With issue #3, all of the pieces were in place to start Jen's solo law practice in earnest. She had an office, a paralegal/assistant and an investigator. What she did not have, however, was a client. We addressed that here with her first case - an asylum filing on behalf of Kristoff Vernard, the son of Victor Von Doom, PhD. (Doom must have a doctorate, right? Probably lots of doctorates. I know he went to school with Reed, but did we ever see him graduate? Could you imagine if "Dr." is just a title he gave himself, like those esteemed practitioners J and Dre? Fabulous.)

ANYWAY.

The reason I chose this particular type of legal case is because immigration law has been a significant part of my own practice for many years. I knew from the start that I wanted to get the law side of things in She-Hulk as correct as possible - being a lawyer, I suspected I would be raked across the coals a bit by other attorneys if I got things wrong. I was correct about that, but we'll get to that more with issues #8-10. I thought I was pretty safe with immigration, though, since I've been doing it so long. While I certainly took some liberties, most of the points you see here are the way asylum actually works in the US.

Not to turn this into a law school class, but in a nutshell, to successfully claim asylum in the States, you have to be able to prove that you've been persecuted in your home country because of your membership in a particular race or class (religious group, etc.), that the persecution was connected to the government, and that it would be likely to recur if you were shipped back home. That posed some tricky questions for me, because Kristoff has mostly been shown to be Doom's hand-picked heir to the throne of Latveria. They've had their differences over the years, but it was pretty consistent that he stood to inherit an entire country if and when Doom died. Hardly "persecution."

Unless... Kristoff wasn't sure that's what he actually wanted. Once I came up with that central idea - that Kristoff was a kid who had been groomed for something all his life, but he was realizing he might want to at least see what else was out there... I had a story.

SHE-HULK #4

Jen goes to see Daredevil, as opposed to just calling him, in part because I loved the idea of her going to a new location (and I wanted to see Javier draw it), but also because I wanted to actually get Matt into the issue and maybe give them a chance to have a little adventure.

Daredevil has been one of my favorite characters forever. FOREVER. I've had this thing ever since I started writing comics - if I have a chance to sneak a character I love into a storyline, even if it's not "their" book, then I'll do it. There's always a chance all of this could vanish tomorrow, and so I want to take opportunities to write Daredevil. Look at the early issues of any of my runs - you'll see cameos popping in, and it's all because of this particular theory.

At this point in the run, we were already talking about doing a court case where She-Hulk faced Daredevil, but it was pretty tentative. There were a lot of question marks surrounding that idea that needed to be addressed before we could move forward. I was hopeful, though, and that's why I put in this little tease…

I couldn't believe that DD and Shulkie had never had a case against each other, and I really wanted to do it, no matter how tricky it would be. So, was this whole sequence possibly a little self-generated audition to show that I could successfully write Daredevil in a future She-Hulk storyline? Maybe, in sort of a backhand way.

Anyway, it was a lot of fun.

SHE-HULK #5

As many of you probably noticed (except possibly those who consume their comics as audiobooks, but I suspect that's a pretty small percentage), the art team changed for issue #5 of SHE-HULK. Javier Pulido and Muntsa Vicente stepped away for issues #5 and #6, while Ron Wimberly did pencils/inks for #5 alongside colors from Rico Renzi, and Ron did the pencils, inks and colors for issue #6.

Why, you may ask? Well, it's pretty simple - the demands on artists to produce the level of art that modern comics readers are used to seeing are significant. It's tough to put out an issue every month and not get behind. So, fill-in teams are used to give the "regular" artists a chance to catch up, maybe even get a little bit ahead. It's very common these days. If you're lucky, you also get to work with a consistent rotating team, so the run can build a strong look and feel over time.

So, when Javier and Muntsa took a planned two-issue break for #5-6, the question became about who would take over the reins. Even in just four issues, the aesthetics of SHE-HULK had become very firmly defined, which meant whoever came on had some big shoes to fill. I talked with my great editors at Marvel about some possibilities for #5-6, and Ron Wimberly's work grabbed me right away. If you're only familiar with him from SHE-HULK, do yourself a favor and check out his Prince of Cats or really any of his work. I think he's phenomenal - in particular, I like the way he plays with perspective, and his sense of color is amazing.

I wanted an artist who would be as idiosyncratic and cool as Javier, but who was not Javier. That was Ron, for sure. It's funny - the art on this series could be strangely divisive. Not everyone loved JP (crazy!) and not everyone loved RW (crazy!), and some people seemed to love one but hate the other. There were clearly people who loved both, too - but people don't always take the time to tweet about things they love. I mean, where's the fun in that?

SHE-HULK #6

Cliffhangers are fun - I try to do them every issue, not just because it's a really good idea to set the hook and bring people back for the next one, but because I like thinking them up. There are a number of types - there's the "whoa, I can't wait to see that..." bit, when you bring in an awesome new character or reveal a setup for the next issue, and then there's the "no... he wouldn't..." type, when you set up something so horrible for your beloved characters that the readers can't help but come back to see how it all pans out. The trick with those is that sometimes you need to fulfill that promise. Sometimes Wyatt does need to fall off the cliff, because if you never follow through on the cliffhanger, then your readers will think you're bluffing every time. It's like a game of chicken with the audience.

In this case... Wyatt does not fall off the cliff. He loses cell reception just as Jen says the magic death words. But perhaps next time, gentle readers... he will. You never know. YOU JUST NEVER KNOW!

SHE-HULK #7

Issue #7 was a huge challenge for me. I'm not sure why, exactly. I knew I wanted to do a one-shot, and I had the plan to do the Hank Pym story pretty early, but getting it all to gel took me a number of drafts. I suspect that was related to a few factors - one, I was coming back into writing for Javier Pulido after a few issues writing for Ron Wimberly, which meant a switching of mental gears. Second, I was maybe a little focused on plot as opposed to what the issue would really be about. You can think up all the goofy bits with shrunken superheroes you want, but if the characters' engines aren't humming along properly, it's just a bunch of goofy bits about shrunken superheroes.

I finally cracked it when I realized that this was a perfect issue to bring the Patsy/Jen partnership/friendship to the fore. The surface story has two business partners in a spat because they can't seem to agree about how to go about their business - and that's paralleled by what happens with Hellcat and She-Hulk here.

It seemed pretty plausible to me that Patsy Walker could have a bit of an inferiority complex about her superheroing gig. She doesn't have powers, really - she can detect magic use, but in a world where people can blast mountains apart, that's not really all that much to speak of. Basically, she's an incredible acrobat and hand-to-hand fighter, and she has one hell of a lot of pizzazz. That's it.

I knew this was a thread I'd want to play out eventually, so I started hitting it early. We see it in her first beats in Issue #2, when she wants to go (drunkenly) beat up AIM, and the AIM agents straight up say she's "powerless." We see it again in Issue #6, when she's trying to figure out what happened with Tigra.

Powerless is a pretty strong word for a woman like Patsy Walker, though. I don't see her as powerless - not even a tiny bit. She might not have the most impressive superpowers, but that's not the only way you can kick some ass.

SHE-HULK #8: “The Good Old Days, Part 1”

Here we are with the start of a three-part story involving something that had never happened before in comics up to this point - She-Hulk vs. Daredevil in a court of law.

Once I started working on the story, I realized why. It was all but impossible to pull off, at least in regular continuity. You could do it in something like an alternate reality setting, but in the real-deal Marvel Universe? Oof.

Let me explain. I'd been talking with my editor Jeanine Schaefer about doing this story for a while, and so it had been in the back of my mind for ages. When we started to get into specifics, it became clear that I'd be dealing with a few very significant bullet points. To wit:

-She-Hulk must be heroic.

-Daredevil must be heroic.

Tricky enough, because if you're writing a court case that feels even a little bit realistic, one side probably comes off a bit looking a bit negative, if not both. Actual litigation can get extremely intense. Just to bring up one example, discrediting the other side's witnesses by impugning their character happens quite often, and it can get vicious. As a lawyer, you're obligated to do everything you can to serve your client, even if it means (sometimes especially if it means) screwing over the other side in some dastardly but perfectly legal and legitimate way (within the confines of our legal system, of course.)

In this story, all of those strategies were immediately off the table for both sides, even though Daredevil in particular has done some very morally questionable things in the past. There's a reason he keeps getting disbarred.

So, tough enough to do this at all. The reason why no writer had tried this before started to become very apparent to me. At which point, I made my life ten times as hard by choosing the defendant - Steve Rogers, aka, at times, as Captain America. At the point in Marvel continuity where this happens, Steve has lost his super-serum-ness, which means he's ninety-some years old. A hale, hearty ninety, for sure - he'd kick you off his lawn if he had one, which he doesn't, because he lives in Red Hook, Brooklyn and almost no one down there has lawns - but still, old.

I chose Cap because I wanted to do something momentous for the story, something worthy of the idea that Marvel's two legal titans were doing battle for the first time. Generally speaking, Steve Rogers is morally unimpeachable, so putting him in a position where he was defending himself against a heinous accusation seemed like it would have some real juice. Of course, it brought up another problem:

-Steve Rogers must be heroic.

SHE-HULK #9

The experience of litigation can be very different depending on which level of the judicial system you're talking about, or area of law, but I chose to make the Steve Rogers case we look at in issues #8-10 a real meatgrinder. In issue #9, we start to see more of what Cap is actually being accused of, through "dying declaration" testimony from a childhood acquaintance of Steve's. I heard from some attorneys on this one - the way I use dying declaration here maybe isn't the way it's always used in California, but I based it on Rule 804(b)(2) in the Federal Rules of Evidence, which states that a witness statement relayed to someone else just prior to death can be admissible in court if it is:

(2) Statement Under the Belief of Imminent Death. In a prosecution for homicide or in a civil case, a statement that the declarant, while believing the declarant’s death to be imminent, made about its cause or circumstances.

I always thought that was a fascinating rule - I mean, like people can't lie when they think they're about to die? It seems very based in what the framers of that law believed about human nature - or wanted to be true. This rule comes from the "common law," which is a set of laws or rules that existed before law was formally codified - almost like very binding rules of thumb that society (especially English society, since that's where much of our legal system comes from) used to handle disputes.

Secret Wars Correspondence: Where Monsters Dwell

Where Monsters Dwell #1 cover by Alex Maleev

Writer Garth Ennis loves dinosaurs.

“They’re huge, they’re noisy, they look fantastic, they rip everything in sight to pieces, and they stretch human imagination beyond its limits,” he explains.

Little surprise then that Ennis resurrects the creatures to go toe-to-toe with the equally legendary Phantom Eagle this May in WHERE MONSTERS DWELL, a Warzones! series spinning out of Secret Wars.

“It’s an old-fashioned, rip-roaring adventure with a strong streak of humor running through it, probably equal parts wry and black,” Ennis says of the story. “I enjoyed it very much, wrote all five episodes back-to-back.”

While readers will surely be familiar with prehistoric beasts from Earth’s distant past, they may not be as acquainted with the Phantom Eagle.

“He’s a fighter pilot, and combat aviation is probably my single greatest interest when it comes to writing fiction,” Ennis notes of the character he first chronicled in a 2008 MAX limited series. “As for Karl Kaufmann himself, I enjoyed writing him as utterly naive about the realities of conflict the first time around, because I was able to slowly educate him—and the reader—in those realities. By the end of the first story he was becoming just enough of a bastard to survive. In [WHERE MONSTERS DWELL], he’s evolved into a rather bigger specimen. Bastards are always fun, especially when you sweep the rug out from under them.

“With nothing to work with but a couple of rusty machine-guns and an airplane made of canvas, wood and glue, Kaufmann's reaction [to the dinosaurs] should not be hard to predict.”

Ennis teams with artist Russ Braun on WHERE MONSTERS DWELL, who he credits for “[h]is usual blend of expert storytelling and characterization.”

“There really is nothing Russ can’t handle,” he says. “He makes it all looks effortless and easy, when of course it isn’t at all. There's an old-school quality to his art that makes him one of my all-time favorite collaborators; he thinks in terms of the whole narrative, not just a series of linked-up pictures. And he’s consistent, and he’s reliable, which are factors I value highly.”

Secret Wars Correspondence: Planet Hulk

Planet Hulk #1 variant cover

In the land of the Hulks, who reigns supreme? Well, the Hulks of course, but Devil Dinosaur and Steve Rogers don’t have to like it. The duo stars in PLANET HULK, a Secret Wars Warzones! tie-in penned by LEGENDARY STAR-LORD writer Sam Humphries with art by ALL-NEW INVADERS artist Marc Laming.

The original “Planet Hulk” storyline, which ran in INCREDIBLE HULK from 2006 to 2007, found the Jade Giant sent off into space by his supposed friends. They intended to land him somewhere peaceful, but instead he crashed on the war-torn planet of Sakaar. While there, the perennial loner joined forces with a group of gladiators calling themselves Warbound and fighting his way to the king's throne.

However, the version seen in this story instead features a planet overrun with Hulks and focuses on Steve Rogers and his compatriot Devil Dinosaur.

Humphries was not available for comment on this story, but he did send along his assistant, and the book’s star, Devil Dinosaur to offer a few details.

“RAAAAAAUGH! PLANET HULK is a decrepit land,” Devil Dinosaur says. “Smoke stains my eyes and dirt burns my nostrils. Bones break under my feet. I smell rotting flesh over the horizon, from the direction of the derelict sun. This place is worse than the coliseum where I fought hard with my Warbound, the Captain. But now we are here. Where ALL IS HULK. All crawls with HULK. There is no place that is not swarming with HULK!”

Devil Dinosaur and the man otherwise known as Captain America not only fight to survive, but also for secret personal reasons.

“GRRRR…Greenland SEETHS WITH DEATH,” Devil Dinosaur growls. “All is blood and destruction. We are not welcome here. We do not belong here. But we will HUNT here! Greenland will CRY AND WHIMPER in our presence. The Captain is driven. He is obsessed. He seeks the Red King. And...a friend.”

While Devil Dinsoaur remains tight-lipped about the more intricate details of PLANET HULK, he does very simply express why readers should be excited about this entry in the larger Secret Wars saga:

“HAAAARRRGH!!,” the dino roars. “The appeal of the premise is OBVIOUS, pathetic mammal!! DEVIL DINOSAUR AND CAPTAIN AMERICA WITH AN AXE AGAINST A CONTINENT OF HULKS!Bring on all Hulks. Devil will crush them in his jaws. Devil will rend them with his teeth. Devil will make mountains of their skulls and howl to the sky-spirits: THE CAPTAIN AND DEVIL DINOSAUR WILL CONQUER PLANET HULK!”

Avengers VS cover by Tom Raney

When one thinks of the Avengers, it conjures images of titanic teamwork, heroism in the highest, and moral fortitude second to none.

They’re also really good at fighting bad guys.

This April, writer Joe Caramagna focuses on that last point with AVENGERS VS, a four-part adventure throwing Earth’s Mightiest Heroes into battle with their deadliest enemies in a race to reclaim Asgardian artifacts before the forces of evil; the quartet of short stories debut digitally before being collected in May in print.

We spoke with Caramagna about what spurs the Avengers into action, how he approached this type of writing, working with greatest artists, and more.

Marvel.com: How did this project come about and how did you get involved?

Joe Caramagna: Former Marvel editor Bill Rosemann had reached out to me a couple of times about writing for him, and when this project came across his desk, he e-mailed to ask if I’d be interested. Marvel commissions short stories from time to time to use in foreign publications and as backup stories and whatnot. They’re usually done-in-one standalone stories, but I pitched the idea of treating them as episodes of a TV show, where each “episode” stands on its own but is part of a larger narrative, or “season.” He had me write a proposal for what I had in mind, and a day or two later, I was writing the first installment.

Marvel.com: How did you select the cast as well as the villains?

Joe Caramagna: The roster was set as the classic Avengers that we know from the comics, movies and animated series, but I chose the villains for each one using a very scientific method called “if I were an artist, what would I like to draw?” It worked out really well. Science!

Marvel.com: Telling four different stories that link together, how did you go about making each distinct yet unified?

Joe Caramagna: I did a similar thing in last year’s GIANT-SIZE SPIDER-MAN and SPIDER-MAN SPECTACULAR. Each chapter introduces a new villain to challenge our heroes but there are certain touchstones that remind the readers that it’s just one chapter of a bigger story. The key is to keep the overarching story very clean so that it doesn’t completely overshadow that particular chapter. It has to be a story that can be summed up and recapped in a line or two.

Marvel.com: What was the process of shifting between four different artists like for this?

Joe Caramagna: Actually, at the time I was writing, I had no idea who’d be drawing what. Bill and his assistant editor Mark Basso did a great job of matching the artist to the stories; Andrea Di Vito and Wellinton Alves have more of a serious, realistic style, Ron Lim has a classic Marvel super hero style, and Dario Brizuela has a light, cartoony style that was perfect for his chapter. Readers that are interested in how comics are made will benefit from seeing how important artist selection is to the tone of your story and that they’re the real stars of this industry.

Whether you’re a fan of Marvel comics, movies, or the animated series, or all of the above, there's something in AVENGERS VS for you!

Get ready to fight alongside Earth’s Mightiest Heroes with AVENGERS VS, coming digitally this April and in print this May!

The History of Daredevil Pt. 42

In 1964, Marvel premiered one of its enduring and exciting super heroes, Daredevil. Whether in his secret identity as blind lawyer Matt Murdock or using his enhanced radar senses, DD stood out from the crowd as an unrelenting crusader for justice.

To celebrate 75 years of Marvel, 50 years of the Man Without Fear and the upcoming debut of “Marvel’s Daredevil” on Netflix in 2015, we look back on the hero of Hell’s Kitchen’s remarkable history!

Matt Murdock’s secret identity as Daredevil once again came into question in 2005, prompting him to address the problem head on, and with startling results.

After DD aided a group of his fellow heroes in confronting a super villain breakout at the Raft in NEW AVENGERS #1, he dealt with the fallout from New York’s original kingpin of crime, Bont, hiring Gladiator to thrash him in DAREDEVIL #67, and then try to reveal his identity to the world in DAREDEVIL #68.

With help from the new White Tiger in escaping Bont’s clutches in DAREDEVIL #69 and #70, the Man Without Fear looked into reports of Wolverine’s rampage on behalf of HYDRA in WOLVERINE #23, which led to a direct fight with the mutant in WOLVERINE #24.

A strange case involving one child allegedly killing another in a satanic ritual brought Matt Murdock to Redemption Valley in DAREDEVIL: REDEMPTION #1. Believing the dead kid’s father to be the real killer, DD went after the man in DAREDEVIL: REDEMPTION #2, but found that the religious fervor that whipped up in town presented much more of a danger in DAREDEVIL: REDEMPTION #3. Matt avoided a stoning in DAREDEVIL: REDEMPTION #4, tried to represent the accused child in a trial in DAREDEVIL: REDEMPTION #5, and failed to clear him in DAREDEVIL: REDEMPTION #6.

A support group began to meet in DAREDEVIL #71 to commiserate on how the Man Without Fear impacted their lives, some for good, and some for bad. In DAREDEVIL #72, one man told how his own father tried to have Foggy Nelson killed, and in DAREDEVIL #73, another member of the group explained their marriage to a serial killer who the hero saved. A particularly zealous member revealed that Murdock himself attended the meetings in DAREDEVIL #74, so to flush out the demon among them, Matt revealed himself in DAREDEVIL #75, as well as his secret identity in an effort to explain his life to the members.

The Kingpin asked reporter Ben Urich to write a story about Matt in DAREDEVIL #76, and when the story went to publication in DAREDEVIL #77, it disrupted our hero’s attempt to patch things up with his estranged wife, Milla. Kingpin then announced he had so-called “Murdock Papers” in DAREDEVIL #78, which brought him attention from not only federal agents, but criminals with ulterior motives for the information contained therein.

Daredevil once again found himself in direct conflict with Frank Castle in DAREDEVIL VS. PUNISHER #1, this time concerning villains Hammerhead and Jackal. The two physically clashed in DAREDEVIL VS. PUNISHER #2, but were interrupted by the assassin Bushwacker in DAREDEVIL VS. PUNISHER #3. DD and the vigilante went at it again in DAREDEVIL VS. PUNISHER #4, but when Punisher accidentally shot an innocent bystander, he brought not only Daredevil down on him hard, but also the cops and the mob in DAREDEVIL VS. PUNISHER #5.
